The history of the Jatre is rooted in two major legends involving the Ramayana and local royal history.
• The Ramayana Connection (Sri Rameshwara Temple):
• The Legend: After defeating Ravana in the Ramayana, Lord Rama was returning to Ayodhya. To wash away the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin, as Ravana was a Brahmin), Rama wished to worship Lord Shiva.
• Consecration: It is believed Lord Rama molded a Shiva Linga out of the river sand and installed it here. Since it was established by Rama, the deity is called Rameshwara, and the town was named Ramnathpura.
• The Subrahmanya Connection (Prasanna Sri Subrahmanya Temple):
• The Dream: About 600 years ago, a saint named Sri Vibhudesha Theertha and the local ruler, Narasappa Nayaka of Holenarasipura, both had a dream where Lord Subrahmanya appeared and requested a temple.
• The Royal Boon: The King, who was childless, was promised an heir if he built the temple. After its construction, he was blessed with a son. The deity was named "Prasanna" (pleased) Subrahmanya because the Lord was pleased with their devotion.
2. The Jatre (Fair) & Rathotsava
The Jatre is primarily centered around the Subrahmanya Swamy Rathotsava (Chariot Festival), which attracts thousands of devotees from Hassan, Mysuru, and Kodagu.
• Timing: The festival is usually celebrated in the Hindu month of Margashira (December–January), specifically around Champa Shashti.
• The Car Festival: The highlight is when the utsava murthy (procession idol) of Lord Subrahmanya is placed in a towering, decorated chariot and pulled through the streets by devotees.
• Cattle Fair: Like many rural fairs in Karnataka, the event traditionally includes a cattle fair where farmers from surrounding regions trade oxen and cows, although the religious aspect remains the primary draw.
3. Unique Rituals & Features
• Sacred Fish (Meenu): A unique attraction of Ramnathpura is the designated "Fish Sanctuary" in the Kaveri river near the Rameshwara temple. The fish here (Mahseer) are considered sacred. During the Jatre, devotees stand on the steps and feed them puffed rice (mandakki) and biscuits. Fishing here is strictly banned.
• Holy Dip: Devotees take a holy dip in the Vahni Pushkarini (a sacred spot in the Kaveri river) before entering the temples to wash away sins.
• Sarpa Dosha Nivarana: Similar to Kukke Subrahmanya, this temple is a major center for performing rituals like Ashlesha Bali and Naga Pratishte to remove snake curses.
4. Other Temples to Visit
Ramnathpura is known for having five sacred lingas (Pancha Lingas). During the fair, pilgrims typically visit:
1. Sri Rameshwara Temple (Main Shiva temple).
2. Sri Pattabhirama Temple: Famous for a rare idol where Goddess Sita is seated on Lord Rama’s left thigh.
3. Sri Agasthyeshwara Temple: Believed to have been installed by the Sage Agastya.
4. Sri Lakshminarasimha Temple.
