The proposed 193rd meeting of the Executive Council (EC) of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), scheduled for November 14 in New Delhi, has been cancelled.
In a letter to EC members, NEHU Registrar (in-charge) Professor S.K. Dixit announced that the meeting “stands cancelled till further notice”, citing ongoing agitation and disruptions on campus, as well as directions from the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Shillong) given the volatile situation.
The cancellation followed protests by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), NEHU Unit, who demanded the meeting not be held outside the university.
NEHUSU General Secretary Martin Warjri clarified that the unions supported the EC meeting’s purpose but objected to its off-campus location. He noted that the Ministry of Education had previously instructed central universities to conduct EC meetings only within their campuses. Warjri questioned the justification and funding for a Delhi meeting amid financial constraints and poor campus infrastructure, particularly in the Law Department.
Both unions welcomed the cancellation and urged the administration to prioritise university operations and upcoming examinations.
