162 mile round trip following history where ever it leads us.
We cross over borders to the Kingdom of Mercia and visited the Cathedral of St Peter, St Paul & St Andrew.
Once an Anglo-Saxon monastry built by Peada son of the Pagan King of Mercia Penda in around 655AD Though the King was pagan his son was Christian and founded the monastry as one of the first centers of the faith in central England.
Around 870 the monastry was reportedly attacked by the great Heathen army led by Ivor the boneless
Only surviving relic of that period is the Hedda stone the marked the resting place of an Anglo-Saxon King or Saint.
Norman building: the building we see today is predominantly Norman built taking 120yrs to complete , it is spectacular example of the period with additions of the gothic period added later.
Of note:
.Aforementioned Hedda stone.
. High Altar
. Catherine of Aragon tomb
. Mary Queen of Scots tomb (void, as moved to Westminster)
. Choir stalls
. Wooden ceiling in the nave
. Hanging crucifix
. Oswalds Chapel
. Vaulted ceiling
. Cloisters and surrounding grounds/graves
