Northridge Local Schools, a small district in Montgomery County just north of Dayton, began switching its early literacy instruction to the Science of Reading long before Gov. DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly mandated such a change statewide via legislation passed in 2023. This video tells the story of their important effort. Adopting new curricula, implementing professional development, and bringing teachers and other staff members onboard all took time. District leaders have also added new systems around data analysis, intervention, and progress monitoring that inform instruction and intervention. Taken together, the changes have ensured that Science of Reading principles are increasingly practiced well and institutionalized. And data show that student progress and achievement are increasing every year.
