Worried about AI job loss? Fear not! Grant Lee, co-founder and CEO of Gamma, looks to history to envision our future.
In the mid 1800s, steam engines became significantly more efficient. The engines needed less coal to get the same output. One would assume that means they need less coal, and coal miners would be out of a job.
But that isn’t what happened!
Instead, as the cost per kilowatt got lower, there was more demand for coal as new production and uses for energy became economically feasible.
That is why you shouldn’t worry about AI causing mass unemployment. AI makes humans more efficient. Just like how the uses for coal increased, there will be more uses for humans. Just like how the industrial revolution made farming more efficient — and those farmers became factory and knowledge workers.
