Test and Set is an atomic hardware instruction used for synchronization, ensuring only one process enters a critical section at a time by setting a shared lock variable to 1 and returning its old value in a single, uninterruptible step, preventing race conditions and enabling mutual exclusion. It works by checking if the lock (a boolean/binary variable) is 0 (unlocked) and, if so, setting it to 1 (locked) and allowing entry; if already 1, the process waits (busy-waits) until the lock is released.
