BATAVIA, Ohio (WKRC) - An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper will not go to jail for his role in a deadly crash.
A Clermont County judge sentenced Jeremy Ault Friday to community control and 80 hours of community service.
The judge said much of the community service will be spent talking with young drivers and officers about this experience.
On January 4th, Trooper Ault was driving on SR 222 in Batavia. Police say he lost control going around a curve and slammed into another car, killing Anthony Bertram.
Bertram’s mom was in court and was emotional talking about the family’s loss.
"We didn't get to say goodbye, we didn't get to give him one last hug and kiss, we didn't get tell him how proud we were of him, how much we loved him. He was just ripped away from us.,” said Bertram.
She also said Anthony Bertram's death was especially hard on her husband. "It has crushed the husband I once had. He used to stand tall and strong at my side. Now, he's just crumpled at my knees."
Trooper Ault suffered an ankle injury during the accident. He recently got out of a wheelchair and apologized to the Bertram family in court.
His attorney, Josh Crousey, said the Bertram family is obviously devastated but has shown empathy to Trooper Ault.
“The judge said compassion, they’ve certainly been compassionate through this process since the very beginning they showed kindness to Trooper Ault Hall on and that helped him get through
Ault's driver’s license is suspended for two years with limited driving privileges, and he will pay more than $6,000 in restitution. The judge could have sentenced him to six months in jail.
Trooper Ault is on leave from Ohio State Highway Patrol. It is unclear what his future is with the agency.
