In 1878, Jack Brown and his Chinese mate, John Ah Choo, discovered Western Tasmania's first payable goldfield. The plains took Jack’s name — but it was well documented John did the heavy lifting. A man known for his strength, kindness, and quiet resilience, Ah Choo became a legend in the camps. But when a new rush broke out at Middleton’s Creek, he was cast out by the very men he once helped feed.
Alone and sick, he spent his final days in a humble bush hut beside a creek… and when three miners found him near death, his last request was simple: “Bury me as an Englishman.”
This video retraces their story — through forgotten trails, old newspaper reports, and days spent hunting for a grave lost to time, scrub, and silence.
Part history, part bush expedition, and part redemption - for a man history tried to forget.
