This bridge is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India, spanning the Brahmaputra River to connect the main city of Guwahati with North Guwahati.
Key Specifications
Structure: A 6-lane extradosed Prestressed Concrete (PSC) bridge.
Length: The main bridge is 1.24 kilometers long, forming part of a larger 8.4-kilometer connectivity corridor.
Cost: Approximately ₹3,030 crore.
Engineering: Built with advanced seismic safety features, including friction pendulum bearings and a real-time Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) to handle the high seismicity of the region.
Impact and Significance
Reduced Travel Time: It drastically cuts the commute between Guwahati and North Guwahati from 45–60 minutes to just 7 minutes.
Twin City Vision: The bridge is a central component of the state's plan to develop North Guwahati as a "twin city," easing the urban pressure on the main metropolitan area.
Access to Landmarks: It provides smoother access to national institutions and religious sites, such as the Kamakhya Temple.
Naming: The bridge is named after Kumar Bhaskar Varma, the 7th-century king of the Kamrupa Kingdom, who is celebrated for ushering in a "golden age" of Assamese history.
Access and Tolls
The bridge will initially be open to pedestrians and visitors for a short period before opening to all vehicles on March 1, 2026. While it is expected to be toll-free for most private vehicles, the state government has indicated that higher tolls will be imposed on commercial vehicles (buses and trucks) to regulate heavy traffic and support maintenance.
