Do you have trouble feeling your chest muscles working when doing the bench press? If so you are not alone, a lot of guys can't get a good pump in the pecs when benching.
When you bench press all the major pressing muscles of the upper body come into play, specifically the chest, shoulders, and triceps, along with numerous smaller stabilizer muscles to help balance and support the bar as you press.
Very often the triceps and the shoulders can handle a great deal of the workload and make it hard to actually feel your chest working. For a lot of guys they can literally rep out to failure with the bench press and not get much of a pump in the chest muscles.
Now you can work on improving your bench press technique and this may help you to pump your chest more when doing the bench press. I have a video about bench press technique that you can watch at: • How To Bench Press More Weight With Proper...
But even with perfect benching technique, you may still not get the direct chest stimulation that you want from benching alone.
If this sounds like you, then I recommend you let the bench press take a back seat in your chest workout program and focus on doing other chest exercises that allow you to actually feel your chest working.
The actual chest exercises may vary from person to person, and will also vary depending on what type of exercise equipment you have available. But here are a few suggestions that you can try to get a better pump in the pecs and a better chest workout.
Pec Deck Flys:
When ever I do pec deck flys with strict form I get an instant pump in the pecs.
Push Ups:
Plain old push ups are an awesome chest exercise. Most guys will be able to get a better pump in their pecs by doing push ups then they will from doing the bench press. If you would like to make your push ups harder and more challenging, check out this video: • Advanced PUSH UP Workout At Home
Chest Press Machine:
Machine chest press, such as the hammer strength or the plate loaded chest press machines help to set your body in an ideal position for targeting your chest muscles when pressing. I especially like the seated chest press machines with the parallel grip handles, I find those really help to pump up my pecs.
Decline Bench Press:
While not as popular as the flat bench, the decline bench maybe a better chest exercise. The decline bench angle will help take some of the shoulder rotation out of the exercise and will allow more of the workload to be placed on the actual chest muscles. Just becareful not to set the bench angle too steep or you'll limit the range of motion. The decline bench press was a favorite chest exercise of former Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates.
These exercises here are the ones that give me the best pump in the chest. When I want to pre-exhaust my pecs I'll start my chest workout with at least one of these moves to get the blood pumping and to create that mind muscle connection in the chest.
Feel free to experiment with these and other chest exercises to see which ones work the best for you. Remember, if the bench press isn't working for you... You don't have to do it. Not every chest workout has to start with the flat barbell bench press. You can still build a big chest without doing the bench press.
