The opposition (primarily INDIA bloc) filed a motion signed by 118 MPs on February 10, 2026, accusing Speaker Om Birla of "blatantly partisan" conduct, including the suspension of opposition MPs and not allowing Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to speak.
The BJP’s political gains from this move include:
Framing Opposition as Anti-Parliamentary: BJP leaders, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, have argued that the motion is not based on genuine grievances but is "ego-driven" and aimed at grabbing headlines. They argue that the opposition is "weaponizing" the rules to create hurdles in the functioning of the House.
Highlighting "Planned Disruption": The Speaker himself, supported by the treasury benches, highlighted that nearly 20 hours of House time were wasted due to disruptions, arguing that the opposition is deliberately creating chaos rather than debating.
Reversing the Narrative of Partisanship: The BJP argues that the Speaker has acted within the rules to maintain order against a "belligerent" opposition. They have used the opportunity to highlight that the opposition, particularly the Congress, has often ignored parliamentary decorum.
Reports indicated that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) initially hesitated to sign the motion, which the BJP could leverage to highlight divisions within the INDIA bloc.
Since the BJP-led coalition has a clear majority, the motion is set to fail, allowing the BJP to demonstrate the strength of its alliance and the futility of the opposition's, according to them, disruptive tactics.
Counter-Offensive against Rahul Gandhi: The BJP has used the debate to specifically target Rahul Gandhi, with leaders alleging his behavior as Leader of the Opposition is irresponsible and damaging to the House's dignity.
