(21 Mar 2014) DIRECTOR AYER SAYS LABEOUF 'REINVENTING HIMSELF'
Director David Ayer says Shia LaBeouf's recent quirky public appearances are "all rather premeditated."
It was after LaBeouf finished filming Ayer's World War II tank movie "Fury" that he was accused of plagiarism and began a string of much-scrutinized public apologies. They included skywriting and a performance-art effort in which he greeted visitors silently with a paper bag over his head.
"He's fine," Ayer said of LaBeouf. "It's fearless. You're not supposed to do that. He's breaking all the rules. He's breaking all the rules. Because there's this very formal dance between the media and the talent. I think he's just reinventing himself on his own terms. And he's good enough of an actor to pull it off."
The 27-year-old former "Transformers" star also posed on the red carpet at the Berlin Film Festival with a paper bag on his head, and walked out of a press conference to promote filmmaker Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac Volume I."
Ayer was speaking at a press junket for his latest film, the action thriller "Sabotage," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. "Fury," which stars Brad Pitt, is set for release later this year.
