In 2025, the UCI Road World Championships will take place on the African continent for the very first time, with Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, serving as the host city for this landmark event, scheduled from 21 to 28 September.
Renowned for the annual Tour du Rwanda, this East African nation, nestled in the Great Rift Valley, will welcome Junior, Under-23, and Elite riders competing for the iconic rainbow jersey. Nicknamed the “land of a thousand hills,” Rwanda’s rugged and hilly terrain will present a new and demanding challenge for many of the athletes experiencing it for the first time.
This edition of the UCI Road World Championships marks another milestone in the global expansion of cycling, coinciding with the growing presence and success of African cyclists on the international stage.
The event also serves as both an inspiration and a catalyst for the continent’s younger generation of riders, offering them the chance to perform and stand out on a world-class platform. In preparation, the UCI, together with its World Cycling Centre (WCC) and the UCI WCC Continental Development Satellite in Paarl, South Africa, has been implementing the Africa 2025 strategy to support and train emerging African talent ahead of the competition.
A notable addition to the 2025 championships is the introduction of standalone races for Women Under-23. Although world titles in this category have been awarded since 2022 in Wollongong, Australia, this will be the first time these athletes compete in separate races from the Women Elite category.
