Dagenham Heathway station opened on 12 September 1932 when the District Line was extended eastwards as part of the electrification project. Its original name was simply “Heathway,” but it was changed to Dagenham Heathway in 1949. The station was built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, although it was served by District Line trains from the start. Its 1930s design includes a central island platform and a sloping walkway leading to the ticket hall, similar to other suburban stations of that era. In 2005–2006, the station building underwent a major refurbishment as part of a wider maintenance programme.

Heathway Shopping Centre
Opposite the station lies the Heathway Shopping Centre, which serves as the second main town centre for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It includes a range of well-known stores such as Boots, JD Sports, Specsavers, and Iceland, making it an important retail destination for the community. The centre is fully accessible, with all shops on one level and easy access to nearby bus stops and parking. It plays a key role in everyday local life as a busy and central shopping hub. Local authorities also have plans for future regeneration of The Heathway to improve the retail environment and strengthen its connection to nearby transport links.
