Join Malcolm every morning this week as he reads a Psalm and shares a thought. This morning, Malcolm shares Psalm 34.

Trivia: Psalm 34 is a Hebrew acrostic poem; each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

After serving 22 years as a musician in Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force it was Mal’s last posting to Bahrein 1992 where his life changed. Serving in the first Gulf War as a medic wasn’t what he signed up for and whilst there he realised that, once this was over, it would probably be time for him to leave the RAF.

Quite by chance, a friend at the church where Mal and his family worshipped knew he too should take a different path in life so he took over as a freelance Christian book salesman in the autumn of 1992. Although the new job involved self-motivation, thousands of miles a year, exceedingly early starts and nights away from home he loved it. He settled into his new role and in 1999 he was awarded Representative of the Year at the annual Christian bookseller’s convention. He went on to win the representative award twice more before retiring fully during the Autumn of 2019.

Mal is married to Margaret. They have two daughters and a son and 5 grandchildren. Mal and Marg can often be seen entertaining the American public through involvement on their son’s TV show “The Late, Late Show with James Corden”. One of Mal’s latest appearances found him reading Psalm 37 after doing a skit about how to hold the Bible. Mal testifies that he was blown away by the worldwide reaction.

Mal is grateful for the opportunity to take part in this year’s “Pop Up Harvest” but doesn’t want folk to think that he’s preaching at them. One of his favourite quotes is from Alexander Fleming, the eminent physician who discovered Penicillin. At a gathering to commemorate his work Fleming was asked “What’s been your greatest discovery”? His answer, Mal believes,
can be a motto for all pilgrims “I’ve made two great discoveries in my life” remarked Fleming “Number 1, is that I’m a great sinner but number 2 is that Jesus is a great saviour.”

Mal hopes that his short morning reflections can be an encouragement for all.
