If I was having a panic attack these are 3 things I would do to instantly calm down, coming from a chronically anxious gal, not a doc!
1. 4-7-8 breathing method, breathe in 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, breathe out for 8 seconds, count in your head and repeat at least 5 times or until you start to feel better. This calms your nervous system. :)
2. Ice your vagus nerve: you can use an ice pack at home or if you are out, buy a drink or ask for a cup of ice. Use the cold cup/can/bottle and put it over your heart area, hold for anywhere from 10-20 mins. Bonus points if you hum your fave song, which also stimulates your vagus nerve.
3. Sensory stimulation: Suck on a mint, warhead, a slice of lemon. Give yourself a big hug. And if you have panic attacks often, you may want to consider buying an essential oil inhaler, these have saved me from MANY panic attacks.
