A New Era for Health: SKMTH Goes Public Amid Recovery
In a landmark move to stabilize the nation’s buckling healthcare sector, Minister of Health Dr. Stephen Modise has announced the immediate transition of Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital (SKMTH) from a private entity to a fully-fledged public institution.
The shift, described as a "rapid transition," is set to be completed by April 1, 2026. This strategic absorption aligns the state-of-the-art facility with government policy and funding frameworks, aimed at easing the immense pressure on existing public infrastructure.
The announcement comes as the Ministry reports a significant turnaround in resources. Since the public health emergency declared in August 2025 which saw medicine availability plummet to a dire 17%,the sector has shown resilience. As of late January 2026, availability has recovered to 60%. Dr. Modise emphasized that while the climb continues, the integration of SKMTH marks a decisive step toward a sustainable, accessible healthcare future for all citizens.
