Noël Wessels, Coming up with a clear cut answer as to what inspires Hidden is not easy. Sure, certain things come to mind. The night, his favorite part of the day, for instance. Possibly cities and their urban decay. Or perhaps a little insanity. Maybe even simply just other music.

What drives him to do what he does is not so hard to figure out though. The constant desire to create has always been in his blood. As a kid, he would fill his time with drawing, playing musical instruments, messing around with reel-to-reel recorders, and record players - anything he could get his hands on. Computers that were initially only capable of producing monophonic bleeps gradually became sequence tools and, although he didn't give up his classical guitar training for years, these machines increasingly became more interesting to experiment with.

The process of sound creation evolved and it became possible to write entire compositions just by using a computer. This appealing degree of control eventually resulted in the first couple of structures some might call songs. Back in those days, the electronic music scene was still in its early development stages but that only made it more interesting. Although genres such as acid and even industrial were already around, the degree of freedom was still limitless... anything was possible as long as it was either danceable, experimental or a bit of both.
Coming from a small city in the Netherlands, it did not seem as though there were many people around doing the same stuff. Mutual friends kept hinting about "this other guy that does stuff with a computer" and eventually Hidden was introduced to Eye-D.
They decided to team up and, back in 1996, the two aspiring producers had the nerve to send out cassette taped demos to a few labels. It came as a complete surprise when two record companies actually responded. That year the first Outside Agency and the first (and last) X-Factor hardcore records made their way to stores and both records became "underground hits".

Although Hidden had been performing for quite some time, releasing records provided a welcome boost in the amount of bookings. Besides playing vinyl, The Outside Agency even decided to do some live shows which were edited into a videoclip that was aired multiple times on national television.

Noël Wessels, Dar una respuesta clara a lo que inspira a Hidden no es fácil. Claro que hay cosas que me vienen a la mente. La noche, su parte favorita del día, por ejemplo. Posiblemente las ciudades y su decadencia urbana. O quizá un poco de locura. Puede que simplemente otra música.

Sin embargo, lo que le impulsa a hacer lo que hace no es tan difícil de averiguar. El deseo constante de crear siempre ha estado en su sangre. De niño, dibujaba, tocaba instrumentos musicales, jugueteaba con grabadoras de carrete y tocadiscos, cualquier cosa que estuviera a su alcance. Los ordenadores, que al principio sólo eran capaces de producir pitidos monofónicos, se convirtieron poco a poco en herramientas de secuenciación y, aunque no abandonó su formación de guitarra clásica durante años, cada vez le resultaba más interesante experimentar con estas máquinas.
El proceso de creación sonora evolucionó y llegó a ser posible escribir composiciones enteras con sólo utilizar un ordenador. Este atractivo grado de control acabó dando lugar a las primeras estructuras que algunos podrían llamar canciones. Por aquel entonces, la escena de la música electrónica estaba aún en sus primeras fases de desarrollo, pero eso sólo la hacía más interesante. Aunque ya existían géneros como el acid e incluso el industrial, el grado de libertad seguía siendo ilimitado... todo era posible mientras fuera bailable, experimental o un poco de ambos.
Viniendo de una pequeña ciudad de los Países Bajos, no parecía que hubiera mucha gente haciendo las mismas cosas. Unos amigos comunes no dejaban de insinuar la existencia de «ese otro tipo que hace cosas con el ordenador» y, finalmente, Hidden conoció a Eye-D.
Decidieron formar equipo y, en 1996, los dos aspirantes a productores se atrevieron a enviar maquetas grabadas en casetes a algunas discográficas. Fue toda una sorpresa que dos discográficas respondieran. Ese año llegaron a las tiendas el primer disco de Outside Agency y el primer (y último) disco de hardcore de X-Factor, y ambos se convirtieron en «éxitos underground».

Aunque Hidden llevaba tiempo actuando, publicar discos supuso un bienvenido impulso en la cantidad de contrataciones. Además de tocar en vinilo, The Outside Agency decidió incluso hacer algunas actuaciones en directo que se editaron en un videoclip que se emitió varias veces en la televisión nacional.
