Thanks for your interest in my video. Here I have a koi pond filter chamber upgrade. Previously this filter chamber contained mosquito nets as its biological media. It's been a while that I really wanted to change the media into pumice stones and lava rocks and finally I did it.

I hope my slide show did its job. I really tried to explain, in the shortest manner I could, the ammonia concern.

Please take note and caution that I took 2 weeks in cleaning, washing and soaking the pumice stone and lava rocks in pond water. After each daily washings the pumice stones and lava rocks were soaked in clean pond water for the entire night and the next day they are washed again and the process repeated for 2 weeks. I also introduced the clean bag of pumice stones and lava rocks to the main pond gradually in batches of 6 bags a day. I basically just tied a rope to the net bag handle and left them soaking at the bottom of the pond. Then carefully observed the reaction of the kois. I was lucky my kois did good and no bad reaction happened, yipeee!

When the last bags of pumice stones and lava rocks were placed at the bottom of the koi pond, the last batch to be cleaned, and 2 days had passed I was convinced now the pumice stones and lava rocks were ready and safe. Because at this time the kois were at their normal behavior.

This bacteria house project is still only 75% complete. I still need to add more bags of pumice stones and lava rocks but that will be easy. The aeration at the filter chamber is a good addition to the filter system. I believe they help in keeping the bags clean as compared if aerators were absent. Having a cleaner bag of pumice stones and lava rocks will give beneficial bacteria more clean real estate to cling unto. The aerators also add dissolved oxygen in the water. So add the two benefits, beneficial bacteria + dissolved oxygen = better water quality = healthier kois.
