Edith Wilson (1896–1981) was an American blues singer, vaudeville performer, and actress from Louisville, Kentucky. She performed and recorded in the classic female blues style in the 1920s and represented the Aunt Jemima brand for Quaker Oats from 1948 to 1966. Wilson remained an active performer until 1980.
The illustrations around the edges of the screen are based on a photograph of Edith Wilson performing the dance 'The Black Bottom'
The short film clip in the middle of the video is from The House of the Devil (1896) by Georges Méliès, to fit with the evil theme of the song.
Woke up this mornin' with the blues all around my head
My baby left me and it nearly killed me dead
He left a note on the table, this is how it read
He said, remember way last spring
When my bluebird began to sing
He said he was going away, he was going away and stay
He told me way last fall
He'd want me no more at all
He has left me with the evil blues
Yes, I'm evil, I know I'm evil, I'm evil as can be
Since my man went away from me
I'm gonna get some ties and gonna go for him now
'Cause he's tryin' to quit me and don't know how
Yes, I'm evil, I know I'm evil
And I've got the evil blues
