Baicai drew on Shenyang’s local love for beer in the FRAME Awards-winning Fatface Coffee pop-up. The temporary shop resonated with the jury – and Shenyang locals – because its connection of beer and coffee culture.
The FRAME Awards 2022 grand jury awarded Baicai’s Fatface Coffee shop as the Pop-Up Shop of the Year. The winning retail space, located in Shenyang, China, married the city’s love for beer with coffee culture. The designer utilized 300 beer crates to build the central barista counter topped with transparent glass and surrounding stools. The naturally modular crates can be reused after the pop-up, making the intervention not only culturally compatible but also sustainable and inexpensive. The integration of the barista and seating areas breaks down spatial hierarchies. A large glass façade adds natural light to the 80-sq-m space, while also furthering the connection between the pop-up and surrounding area.
