Title: ReadDress 2020
The title is a compound of the word Read and Dress. Read because the sculpture is made from the pages of books. The word “Read” is pronounced in the past tense to get the word “Redress” which means to improve or reform. The sculpture is a reformation and a transformation of old discarded books
Model: Hannah Woollams
About the dress:
The dress is designed by Ritchie Ares Doña. This wearable piece reflects his meticulous and repetitive process of making. Ritchie has always worked with books and discarded flyers. In this piece, he ventured from his usual method of folding to sewing thousands of triangles. When Ritchie made this work, he designed it with the natural flow of the woman’s body. The work is not to cover the woman’s form but to reflect it through the sculpture.
In this work, Ritchie reflects resourcefulness in creating artworks. The dress expresses the inherent beauty and value of waste. We throw away things because we consider them of no value. This piece shows that what we throw away can potentially be beautiful.
About the artist:
Ritchie is an artist based in the North West of Tasmania. He mainly works with recyclable materials. His works ranges from small sculptures made from flyers and books to large installations. He consider himself as a community artist. His creative passion is driven by creating art projects with the community.
