This was Cochran’s twenty-first revue, and advertised as his “biggest yet”. It had a cast of 18 principals, a chorus of 45, plus 16 of “Mr Cochran’s Young Ladies” and 6 speciality can-can dancers. The sketches included a Gilbert & Sullivan parody, a Victorian sketch about a postman and a long-awaited letter, and the ‘Private Life of Napoleon’. Florence Desmond appeared as the first mother to fly with her baby to the North Pole, and Nora Howard scored with “Other People’s Babies”, portraying an elderly nurse, “mother to dozens but nobody’s wife”.
The “First Waltz” ballet of Tilly Losch, the exotic abandon of La Jana, the ballroom dancing display and the exuberant Can-Can dancers were praised, as was the “frantic” finale with its throng of demented dancers displaying the current desire for speed as opposed to elegance. A sketch called “EveVolution” contrasted the demeanour and deportment of chorus girls in the 1890s, 1900s and 1934. There were several comedy items set in Broadcasting House, including one featuring “The Mouth Organist” with the 20 yearold harmonica player, Larry Adler. This was a “no expenses spared” revue and became one of the best selling of all Cochran’s shows. [info : overthefootlights.co.uk]
