Lecture at the 2nd workshop on "Singularities of general relativity and their quantum fate" 24.05.2018, Warsaw.
We show that the Unruh effect can be associated with the partitioning of the real line, and derived from the basic representation theory of the group of affine transformations in one dimension. Our result shows that thermal distributions naturally emerge in connecting quantum states belonging to representations related to distinct notions of translational symmetry. The existence of inaccessible regions of configuration space is the key ingredient of the analysis.
