Comparing 5 Tiffen Star Filters | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography with Lindsay Adler

Описание: If you want to add some glitz and glam to your photos, it's time for a star filter! In this video I compare five different Tiffin star filters.

First, let's start with how to utilize a start filter:
(a) First you need something reflective, like a disco ball, gemstone, or glitter.
(b) You also need hard light, which is essential for bringing out the most in a star filter. This could be the sun, a bare strobe or a wide range of hard light modifiers.

With these two essentials in place you can add your star filter, but which one to choose? Tiffin offers several options, each creating different starburst effects.

1. Four Point Star Filter: This is my go-to recommendation for most photographers because it’s easy to use and shows starbursts clearly, even with small reflections like the disco ball and streamers. It adds a subtle effect without overpowering the image.

2. Six Point Star Filter: Similar to the four-point but more dramatic. It creates a stronger effect and increases the amount of starbursts, which slightly lowers contrast but adds a more intense look.

3. Hollywood Star Filter: This filter gives smaller clusters of starbursts and requires precise hard light at the right angle. It’s subtle and works best when you want a unique star pattern.

4. North Star Filter: One of my favorites. It produces intricate, beautiful star shapes that don’t overpower the image. You need a strong reflection to get the effect, but when you do, it’s stunning and almost surreal.

5. Hyper Star Filter: This filter creates numerous rays, offering a more complex effect. It’s a little more intense, so it’s great when you want something bold.

Demonstration lighting setup:
I set up four hard light sources for this shoot:
An optical spot to create a slice of light on the face
Two rim lights (purple and pink)
A blue bare bulb in the front to fill shadows and enhance reflections.

We’ve now compared five Tiffin star filters. Which one’s right for you? It depends on the effect you want to achieve. If you’re new, start with the four-point filter, then try others. Personally, I love the four-point and North Star.
