India and Pakistan have once again held Track 2 diplomatic talks in Colombo and Bangkok, even as official government-level dialogue remains suspended. But why are the two nuclear-armed neighbours talking behind closed doors? What exactly is Track 2 diplomacy? Can unofficial discussions help prevent another military escalation after the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the May 2025 conflict?
In this video, we explain the concept of Track 2 diplomacy, the difference between Track 1, Track 1.5 and Track 2 engagements, why neutral countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand are hosting these meetings, and why terrorism, water sharing, conflict management and crisis communication remain at the centre of discussions.
We also analyse India's official position that "terror and talks cannot go together," the current status of India-Pakistan relations, the role of retired diplomats and military officials, and why these backchannel engagements continue despite diplomatic deadlock. This topic is highly relevant for UPSC Prelims, UPSC Mains GS Paper II (International Relations), State PSCs, UGC NET, CDS, CAPF and Current Affairs. Recent reporting suggests Track II engagements have increasingly focused on crisis management rather than dispute resolution following the deterioration in bilateral ties.
