They fought for a country that refused to fight for them.
In Episode 2 of Lex on the Record, we tell the powerful and often overlooked story of the Harlem Hellfighters, an all-Black World War I regiment that spent more time in combat than any other American unit, yet returned home to segregation, racism, and silence.
Officially known as the 369th Infantry Regiment, these soldiers were denied the opportunity to fight under American command and instead served alongside French forces on the front lines in Europe. They proved their courage, resilience, and skill in battle, even as they were denied basic respect at home.
In this episode, we explore:
Who the Harlem Hellfighters were and why they mattered
How segregation shaped their military experience
Why they served under French command instead of American
The legacy they left behind and why it still matters today
This is a story about bravery without recognition, service without equality, and excellence in the face of injustice.
Lex on the Record exists to tell the stories history tried to forget...and this is one of them.
