When should I undercoat or rustproof my vehicle?
The best time of year to undercoat your vehicle is in the warmer months.

Oil base undercoating gets thin in the summer months allowing it to move around more and to seep into the metal better allowing it to condition the metals.

Oil base undercoating thickens In colder temperatures and does not move around as much as the product thickens from temperature.
Their for it does not move around as much or soak into the metal as much to condition the metals.

Think of it like molasses, warm Molasses move around easier then cold molasses, oil based products act similar.

Should I undercoat or rustproof my new vehicle or a vehicle that is older?
if you take 2 pieces of bare steel. apply a rust proofing or undercoating on one piece of steel and wash the other piece of steel of all impurities. place both outside in the rain or grass for a couple days. come back. the one with no undercoating will be rusted.

it is best to keep your vehicle undercoated clean to prevent rust if looking to keep it for a long time.

a older vehicle that is starting to show some rust it is ok to undercoat to try and preserve the steel. a vehicle that is on the verge of having holes in the steel I would suggest putting your money towards a new vehicle or repair as necessary.
once rust starts their is not much that is going to stop it. you can potentially slow it down with undercoating.

I would suggest staying away from rubberized or solid paint like undercoating as it traps in moisture and will potentially speed up the rusting process.


The oil base undercoating products are designed to soak into the metals. The product should soak through surface rust to condition the metal below. if it is flaky rust the flaky rust should be removed for the undercoating to take proper
