This video explains what a pressure injury (also known as a bedsore) is — an area of damaged skin caused by prolonged pressure, often occurring in patients who are immobile.
Pressure injuries can be prevented with proper care.
To prevent pressure injuries in hospitalized children:
— Check the skin regularly, especially under medical devices.
— Reposition your child at least every 2 hours to avoid pressure buildup.
— Use pressure-reducing mattresses or cushions.
— Keep the skin clean and dry, including around devices like tracheostomies or feeding tubes.
— Apply moisture barrier creams as needed.
Rotate devices like pulse oximeters every 6 hours to prevent skin damage.
The video encourages parents to take an active role in prevention and reminds them that their child’s care is the hospital's top priority.
