Los Angeles-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter obli is set to release his debut album ‘Soft Speak’ via Anjunachill.

Beginning his career touring with Sonny Moore (Skrillex), obli went on to spend years performing and recording with Dead Sara, as well as playing guitar for multi-platinum, GRAMMY-nominated artist Julia Michaels. Launching obli as a solo project in 2019, early momentum quickly followed when his debut release was featured in a mix by Mild Minds, leading to a signing with ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective. Since then, he has built a growing catalogue of releases, earning support from Zane Lowe (Apple Music 1), BBC Radio (Jack Saunders, Lauren Laverne, Annie Mac, Sian Eleri, Craig Charles), Double J, Wonderland, NOTION, Line Of Best Fit, and artists including RÜFÜS DU SOL, Lane 8 and ODESZA. As a live performer, obli has toured North America supporting BAYNK and performed headline shows, including a sold-out EP launch at Barboza in Seattle.

Now entering a new chapter with Anjunachill, ‘Soft Speak’ marks his most fully realised and conceptually cohesive work to date.

“‘Soft Speak’ to me is a return to where I first fell in love with electronic music - the more gentle, the softer side of it,” he says. Written during a period of personal reflection, the album is shaped by a desire to create space for stillness and softness in an increasingly overwhelming world. “I wanted to make something that people could really sink into… a place where they can disconnect, if only for a moment.”

Opening with ‘Victoria,’ a warm, shimmering, piano-led lo-fi piece that grew from a simple guitar chord progression, obli sets the emotional tone early. An ode to his partner, the track is described by the artist as “the most beautiful song I’ve ever put together,” carrying a sense of intimacy and devotion that lingers long after it ends. In contrast, ‘We Are Sitting in a Scary Place’ introduces a heavier, synth-laden palette; its unresolved tension creates a natural unease that mirrors obli’s perspective on the current state of the world - with the title offering what he describes as a “childlike way” of expressing the uncertainty of modern life.

Tracks like ‘He Dreams of Friends’ and ‘Cory’s New Spot’ form the emotional backbone of the album - deeply personal tributes to a close friend lost unexpectedly. ‘He Dreams of Friends’ unfolds as a nostalgic, hazy composition built on intricate guitar work and vocal fragments, its title borrowed from a mixtape his friend once shared: “He sent me and some close friends a SoundCloud mix… and the title was ‘Papi Dreams of Friends.’ I thought a lot about him while finishing the record and wanted to give him a nod with this song.” Closing the album, ‘Cory’s New Spot’ incorporates a real voice memo recorded at the opening of his friend’s business - a deeply human moment that allows his voice and spirit to live on. It serves as a poignant final chapter, fading out like the end of a film.

Elsewhere, the title track ‘Soft Speak’ - is a slow-burning, hypnotic composition that gradually unfolds from darkness into light, embodying the record’s core themes of stillness and release. ‘Mouse’ is an undulating, introspective piece driven by swelling synth lines, capturing a rare moment of spontaneity born from an early morning improvisation that left obli “truly moved” in real time. ‘Sun Sun Sun’ leans into hazy, psychedelic textures and beat-driven sounds, drawing influence from early Clams Casino, while ‘A Monster Jumped Out of the Trees’ introduces a cinematic, almost surreal quality, anchored by a voice memo of his niece telling a story; a fleeting, intimate moment that adds warmth and innocence to the album’s broader themes.

The album’s more dance-leaning moments arrive in ‘Simple Things’ and ‘Loving You’. The former begins as a delicate piano piece before gradually unfolding into something deeper and more uplifting, as subtle percussion and low-end textures gently transform it into a more propulsive, immersive composition. ‘Loving You’, meanwhile, stands as one of the record’s more outward-facing tracks - a warm, house-leaning cut that moves further into dance territory.

“In a way, this album is about trying to hold onto something,” he says. “Whether that’s a feeling, a memory, or just a moment of stillness.”
