Tüttö: EU Cities and Regions Are Getting More Responsibilities — But Not Enough Resources

Описание: President of the European Committee of the Regions Kata Tüttö warned that Europe’s cities and regions are facing a growing mismatch between what they are expected to deliver and the resources available to them.
She said the Committee produces an annual report to capture the “pulse” of Europe’s cities, regions and territories, supported by data including from Eurostat.

Tüttö said the European Week of Regions and Cities would focus heavily on money and the resources needed to implement Europe’s growing number of strategies and policy goals.
Cities and regions, she argued, are being given more responsibilities while expectations continue to rise.

But she warned that funding is not keeping pace.
“There is a huge gap emerging between expectations, agency and resources and the reality.”
Tüttö said European strategies need to be backed by the financial means required to deliver them on the ground.

Her message was that ambitious European objectives will only succeed if local and regional authorities have the resources and capacity to turn them into reality.
