Turku, known as Åbo in Swedish, is a city located in the southwest of Finland, at the mouth of the Aura River. It’s the regional capital of Southwest Finland and is recognized as Finland’s oldest city, with its history dating back to the 13th century. As of December 31, 2023, Turku had a population of approximately 201,863, making it the sixth-largest city in Finland by population.

The city has a rich cultural and historical heritage, being the site of the country’s first university, the Royal Academy of Turku, founded when Finland was part of Sweden. Although the university was later moved to Helsinki and became the University of Helsinki, Turku remains an important educational and cultural center. The city is also known for its medieval castle, Turku Castle, and the Turku Cathedral, which is an important religious landmark.

Turku serves as a significant commercial port and has been traditionally considered the gateway to the west for Finland. It hosts various events throughout the year, including music, art, and sports events, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.
