Equivoque (1985) is based on Contrapunctus XII of J.S. Bach’s The Art of the Fugue and was inspired by an etching called Up and Down by M.C. Escher. Here two dramatically distant keys, D minor and Ab minor, serve as polarities. The keys sound rapidly together off the beat. Equivoque explores the way we perceive tonality and the dual nature of our perception in general. Like most of Hatzis’ work of the mid-1980s, Equivoque is short, so don’t blink your ears or you may miss it.
