Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are among the 10 Black quarterbacks starting in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. Just a year earlier, 2023 saw a record 14 starters—a major shift for a position once predominantly reserved for white players. Despite limited opportunities early on, Black quarterbacks have had key moments in NFL history.
In the 1920s, Fritz Pollard became the first Black quarterback in the NFL and the first Black head coach. By 1949 George Taliaferro became the first Black player drafted into the league, who also played quarterback. But even into the 1960s, few Black quarterbacks ever took a snap.
In the 1970s and 1980s, as few as 10 Black quarterbacks started games. One of them, Doug Williams, made history as the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl and be named MVP.
By the 1990s, Black quarterbacks made up just 6% of NFL starters. That number grew to 12% in the early 2000s, with Michael Vick becoming the first Black quarterback drafted first overall in 2001.
In 2023, Black quarterbacks accounted for 40% of NFL starters—the highest representation in league history.
