Seismic Response of G+8 RC Building Frame having Setback Irregularity and Subjected to Mainshock-Aftershocks Sequences
Layman Abstract : During an earthquake, a big shock (called the mainshock) is often followed by smaller ones (aftershocks). These repeated shakes can be especially dangerous for buildings that are not shaped evenly—particularly those with "setback irregularities," where upper floors are smaller or shifted compared to the ones below. These unusual shapes make buildings more vulnerable during earthquakes.
In this study, we looked at how a 9-story (G+8) concrete building reacts to both mainshocks and aftershocks. We tested three types of buildings: one with a regular shape (B1), one with some setback irregularities (B2), and one with more severe setback irregularities (B3). We ran simulations using real earthquake data and analyzed the results with a program called ETABS.
The results showed that buildings Seismic Analysis with irregular shapes were more affected by aftershocks. The most regular building (B1) was the strongest, while the most irregular one (B3) was the weakest. B3 had the biggest sideways movement (up to 214 mm) and showed the most damage, especially when hit by the Coalinga earthquake. During another earthquake (Valparaíso), it showed the lowest strength to resist sideways forces, making it the most likely to collapse.
This study shows how important it is to consider the shape and design of buildings iIt is concluded that the irregular building model B3 exhibits the highest maximum displacement of nearly 214 mm n earthquake zones. It helps engineers understand how to make buildings safer and more earthquake-resistant in the future.
