September 1944.
Footage of Allied soldiers in action against the German occupiers of Holland during "Operation Market Garden", the plan to penetrate German territory through Holland and bring an early end to the war.
The operation commenced on September 17th 1944 when 10,000 men were dropped or landed by glider behind German lines in an attempt to secure the Rhine Bridge.
It ended nine days later in defeat.
About 6,000 were captured and 1,130 were killed. Just over 2,000 were evacuated. About 300 also managed to escape after been sheltered by Dutch citizens.
The German authorities expelled the inhabitants of Arnhem and Oosterbeek and plundered the entire area as "war booty".

1. The Raid on Arnhem was codenamed "Operation Market Garden".
2. A book on the operation entitled "A Bridge Too Far" was published in 1974 by Simon & Schuster in New York and by Hamish Hamilton in London. It was written by Cornelius Ryan.
3. A Hollywood film based on Ryan's book, "A Bridge Too Far", was released in 1977.
4. The title of both book and film is often attibuted to a (disputed) comment made by British Lieutenant General Frederick Browning, deputy commander of the First Allied Airborne Army, who told Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the operation's architect, before the operation: "I think we may be going a bridge too far."
