Scenic Road Trip: Cranbrook to Castlegar via Kootenay Bay Ferry
Embark on one of southeastern British Columbia’s most stunning drives, beginning in the charming city of *Cranbrook* and winding your way northwest toward **Castlegar**. This route blends mountain beauty, lakeside tranquility, and quirky roadside gems.
Your journey starts heading west from Cranbrook on Highway 3, cutting through the wide-open Kootenay River valley. About halfway to Creston, be sure to stop at the **Goat River Canyon Viewpoint**, a lesser-known gem where the canyon slices dramatically through the rock. This is a great place to stretch your legs and soak in the powerful beauty of rushing water and layered canyon walls.
From there, continue into Creston, a fertile valley town surrounded by orchards and vineyards. A coffee or lunch break in one of Creston’s cozy cafés is a perfect way to enjoy the town’s laid-back vibe before continuing north on Highway 3A.
The drive along the *east shore of Kootenay Lake* is nothing short of spectacular. The road hugs the shoreline, winding past forested cliffs and occasional lakefront cottages. Keep an eye out for the *Crawford Bay Lighthouse* — a quirky, landlocked lighthouse replica that stands as a fun roadside photo-op and a symbol of local artistic spirit. Crawford Bay itself is worth a longer stop, known for its artisan shops and peaceful lakeside atmosphere.
Soon, you'll reach Kootenay Bay, where you’ll board the free ferry across the vast and shimmering Kootenay Lake to Balfour. The 35-minute ride is a highlight in itself — a peaceful glide across the water with panoramic mountain views.
From Balfour, head south to the cultural hub of Nelson, one of BC’s most vibrant mountain towns. Take some time to explore its historic downtown, filled with heritage buildings, independent shops, and great food. If you have the time, a stroll along the lakeshore or a visit to one of its galleries is well worth it.
Finally, the road curves westward along the banks of the Kootenay River toward Castlegar, a quieter city nestled at the confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers. This final leg offers more stunning scenery, particularly in fall when the surrounding hills explode with color.
