i complain often when i go on first (and what usually turns into the only) dates about how my love for my home of washington d.c. is soured only by its lack of readily available mountain ranges. the closest one available, the blue ridge mountains to the southwest, takes me about a day to get to by bike, and i try to visit a couple times a year, usually when i have a long weekend away from work. i rode down to front royal after passing through the town of purcellville on valentine's day with the intention of riding skyline drive the next day, and while i usually like to approach the blue ridge mountains from the opposite side by going through harper's ferry, straight through the gorgeous shenandoah valley, this happened to be slightly faster, and i got to see a nice sunset over the snowy fields.
