In this video I discuss how to prune a fig tree to keep it small, lower a fig tress height and to take single, long, leggy trunks or limbs and apply a trunk chopping technique. Fig trees are incredibly hardy, so when you trunk chop your fig tree you don't need to worry about the damage that may be caused by the procedure.

So, why do we want to prune or trunk chop fig trees? Quite often fig trees can grow rapidly and develop long, leggy limbs, branches or shoots. By hard pruning fig trees we are able to stimulate new growth and encourage fruiting as well as lower the tree canopy to make accessing fruit easier.
When it comes to growing fig trees in containers it is very important to make sure the fig tree remains a certain size to not blow or fall over, but also has branches and leaves relative to the amount of soil and space the pot or bucket is offering the tree.
When trunk chopping a fig tree, some important things to remember include:
1. Making sure you do not cut too close to the bud or knuckle to allow for natural die back
2. Make the trunk cut at a 45 degree angle to ensure water and rain can easily run off.
