Torgya Festival is a vibrant Buddhist monastic festival celebrated annually at the Gontse Rabgyeling Monastery (Bomdila Monastery) in Bomdila, located in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. Usually held in January, the festival spans three days and is performed by the Monpa Buddhist community.
Key Features of the Festival
Ritual Dances (Chham)
Monks perform elaborate masked dances called chham, representing protective deities and mythological beings. These dances are believed to ward off evil forces, purify the environment, and ensure prosperity for the community.
Torgya Offering
The festival is named after the ceremonial creation and destruction of a special offering called “Torma”, made from butter and barley flour. The burning of the Torma symbolizes the elimination of negative energies.
Religious Ceremonies
Special prayers, chants, and fire rituals are conducted to invoke blessings for peace, good health, and harmony in the region.
Cultural Significance
Torgya strengthens community bonds and preserves centuries-old Buddhist traditions of the Monpa people. Every third year, it is celebrated on a grander scale, known as “Dungyur Torgya.”
