Understanding Consciousness Connecting Quantum Physics and Advaita Vedanta

Consciousness has become a key topic in both science and philosophy today. Though for much of the 20th century, Western science largely avoided the topic, consciousness was important even to early thinkers like the Greek atomists, Galileo, and Newton. For example, Galileo saw color as something created in the mind, while Newton thought color was an intrinsic property of light itself.
In the last two decades, attempts to connect science and spirituality have become more common. Many of these attempts, however, focus on a materialist worldview, which suggests that matter is the foundation of everything. This perspective often denies the role of consciousness as a guiding force in shaping reality. In contrast, the interpretation of quantum mechanics, especially when viewed through the lens of consciousness, allows us to see that consciousness can influence physical reality, a concept known as "downward causation."
Physics aims to understand the nature of the physical world, discovering the forces and laws that govern it. Similarly, Advaita Vedanta and other Indian philosophies seek to understand both the material world and the transcendental reality behind it. Advaita (which means "non-duality" or oneness) teaches that all reality is interconnected, and that the ultimate truth is a singular, unified consciousness.
Quantum physics, with its exploration of the nature of particles, waves, and uncertainty, mirrors some of these ancient ideas. Adi Shankaracharya, the founder of Advaita Vedanta, emphasized that the world we perceive is an illusion (Maya), and that true reality is the underlying consciousness (Brahman). Similarly, in quantum mechanics, the act of observation can influence the outcome of experiments, suggesting that consciousness plays a fundamental role in shaping reality.
In simple terms: both quantum physics and Advaita Vedanta suggest that reality is not just made of physical matter, but is deeply connected to consciousness. Understanding this connection can open doors to new ways of thinking about the universe and ourselves.
