The inaugural ride of Nebraska’s Cowboy Trail was a wild and wonderful week through Sand Hills, small towns, and endless prairie beauty!
We kicked things off in Nenzel with a vineyard tour and dinner at the charming Niobrara Valley Vineyards. Who knew Nebraska produced such great craft wine and vinegars? After saddling up in Valentine, our cycling pioneers headed east, stopping for lunch at the notorious L Bow Room in Johnstown and enjoying hearty fare at the Sand Hills Lounge in the mystic little town of Long Pine.
From Johnstown to Newport, we pedaled 39 scenic miles, soaking in the local flavor in Bassett before landing at the iconic Newport Pool Hall, a highlight of a town once known as the hay capital of the world. Snacks, swag, and pool… all on the honor system!
Midweek, we cruised through the stunning Niobrara River Valley under perfect skies, stopping at the White Horse Museum in Stuart before landing in O’Neill (Nebraska’s Irish capital) for a fun-filled evening at Tacos and Tequila.
Thursday brought one of the most breathtaking stretches yet: 44 miles to Neligh, complete with a visit to the historic Neligh Mill. We closed out the week in Norfolk, hometown of Johnny Carson, after a fantastic SAG breakfast from our friends at New 2U Community Thrift Store in Tilden. Our farewell dinner at Two Bills in Clearwater featured some of the best burgers we've ever had!
The trail was peaceful and pristine, with fewer than five other riders spotted over the course of three days. Even better? We wrapped the week with ZERO tire punctures.
Great rides, even better people, and small-town hospitality that’s tough to beat, this was an instant classic. Get your stirrups sharpened and come ride with us on the Cowboy Trail next year!
