Cumberland Falls is 68-foot-tall (21m) located in Kentucky's Daniel Boone National Forest. The falls are one of the few places in the western hemisphere where a moonbow can frequently be seen on nights with a full moon.

Cumberland Falls, sometimes called the Little Niagara, the Niagara of the South, or the Great Falls, is a waterfall on the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky. Spanning the river at the border of McCreary and Whitley counties, the waterfall is the central feature of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park and is part of the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves designated Wild River System.

It is believed the current falls formed as the result of erosion from its original starting place at an escarpment far downstream. The site of the falls was occupied in pre-modern times by a variety of indigenous peoples, and more recently has passed through multiple private owners until eventually being donated, along with surrounding land to Kentucky in 1930.

The romance of the waterfall at Cumberland Falls State Park is enhanced on the occasional moonlit night by a moonbow. The spectacular sight of the moonbow attracts people from all over the world.

What exactly creates the moonbow? The light from the moon is shining through the water droplets in the mist at the bottom of the falls, creating the delicate arc of light. To the human eye it often looks like a faint white arc, but in long-exposure photographs, the seven colors of the rainbow are visible.

The naturalist John Muir wrote about the Yosemite National Park moonbows, which he called spray bows. Moonbows are also visible in Victoria Falls in Zambia.

Geography note: Cumberland Falls State Park is split between Whitley and McCreary counties. Everyone watching the moonbow is standing in Whitley County; the moonbow and the falls themselves are in McCreary County.

Cumberland Falls is one of the few places in the world that regularly produces a moonbow. The “moonbow,” also called a white rainbow or lunar rainbow, is formed just like a rainbow—light is refracted in tiny water droplets—and appears for the two or so days, as long as the sky is clear, on either end of the full moon

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is the perfect destination to introduce the family to the thrill of horseback riding. The park offers guided trail rides that are easy enough for the first timer and still adventurous for the more experienced. Riders, age 6 and up will enjoy a 45-minute ride through an eastern Kentucky forest, beautiful in any season. The stables open weekends in May and are daily after Memorial Weekend until Labor Day. Also open on weekends during Sept. and Oct. Rides start on the hour from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $20.00 per person. Personal horses are not permitted on the trails at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, but there are several opportunities to do so in the surrounding area. There are many miles of trails and several horse camps in the nearby Daniel Boone National Forest and The Big South Fork National River and Recreation area.
