The Medieval Era (aka Medieval Age, Dark Ages and Middle Ages) is one of the most popular historical eras for films. This period of time often features romanticized narratives contrasted against brutal and bleak conditions. Medieval Era films are set from 600 AD to 1500 AD and typically feature European historical events. For the purposes of our Medieval Era Films list and this video, we have also included films set in Asia during this time which includes the Medieval China Period of the Sui Dynasty (581 Ad - 618 AD) to the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD).

Romanticized elements featured in film from this period include popular historical (and mythical) characters including Robin Hood, King Arthur & Lancelot, William Wallace (Braveheart), Joan of Arc and more. Sword & Sorcery films, while often a Fantasy subgenre, are also usually set during the Medieval Era and sometimes include historical era characters or events.

In this video, we'll look at some rare and lesser-known films set during the Medieval Era including the last remaining Scythians in 1000 AD, the Norwegian civil war around 1206 AD and the rise of Genghis Khan in the 13th Century.
