Welcome to Purushartha Collective. Today we explore the Aitareya Upanishad, a key text from the Rig Veda that is celebrated for containing one of the four "Mahavakyas" (Great Sayings) of the Vedanta.
The Mahavakya: "Prajñānam Brahma"
a. Prajñānam: This translates to consciousness, intelligence, or insight.
b. Brahma: This refers to Brahman, the Absolute, the ultimate, all-pervading reality.
c. The Statement: "Consciousness is Brahman." This profound equation identifies the very fabric of the cosmos with the principle of consciousness itself. It is the definitive statement on the non-dual nature of reality.
Supporting Declaration: This is complemented by the statement "Sarvam khalv idam Brahman," meaning "All this is indeed Brahman," which denies any ultimate separation between the individual, the world, and the Absolute.
Other Themes: The Aitareya Upanishad also delves into a creation hypothesis, providing a metaphysical account of how the universal Self (Ātman) created the cosmos and living beings.
