Sikh Religious Procession Halted in New Zealand After Protest by Right-Wing Group

A 31-year-old Dalit migrant labourer, Ramnarayan Baghel, was beaten to death by a mob after being wrongly suspected of theft and falsely believed to be a Bangladeshi national.

Baghel, a native of Chhattisgarh, had arrived in Palakkad on December 13 in search of work. He was employed as a daily-wage labourer at a construction site and lived in extreme poverty. He is survived by his wife and two young sons.

TA rare and disturbing incident has emerged from New Zealand, where a peaceful Sikh religious procession was forced to halt mid-way following a confrontation with a group of protesters in South Auckland.

The incident took place on Great South Road, where police were compelled to intervene and physically separate the protesters from the Sikh procession to prevent any escalation. Authorities said police presence was maintained until the procession concluded to ensure the safety of the Sikh community.

The protesters were linked to controversial political leader Brian Tamaki and his organisation Destiny Church, a Christian fundamentalist group. Videos shared on Tamaki’s social media platforms show members of a group calling themselves “True Patriots of NZ” confronting the Sikh procession.

The group unfurled banners reading “This is New Zealand, not India” and wore shirts with slogans such as “Kiwis First,” “Keep NZ, NZ,” and “True Patriot.” They also performed a haka-style display directed at the Sikh community, chanting religious slogans while police stood between the two sides.

The incident has drawn concern beyond New Zealand. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has flagged the episode as deeply troubling. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has urged India’s central government to raise the matter with New Zealand’s Ambassador to India.

Officials in New Zealand have not reported injuries, but the incident has sparked debate over religious freedom, public safety, and hate-driven disruptions in public spaces.
