A mouth ulcer is the loss or erosion of part of the delicate tissue that lines the inside of the mouth. There are many things that can cause oral ulcers. The most common cause is injury, such as accidentally biting the inside of your cheek. Other causes include aphthous ulceration, certain medications, skin rashes in the mouth, viral, bacterial and fungal infections, chemicals, some medical conditions and, rarely, an ulcer may represent oral cancer.

Another important point worth noting is that if the ulcer is more than a month old a Biopsy of that area is recommended on priority. To conclude, Dr. Chirag Chamria states that the bottom line remains that if an oral ulcer persists for more than 2 weeks, it needs professional intervention. Dr. Chamria reiterates that in some cases where oral ulcers become cancerous, then early detection of an oral cancer is curable.

Common Treatment for Oral Ulcers that can be treated at home:
✅ Drink plenty of water
✅ Avoid hot, spicy, sour food
✅ Use Topical steroid ointment such as triamcinolone 0.1%
✅ Use Topical anesthetic gels- such as dologel CT
✅ Antibiotics- tetracycline (only prescribed)
✅ Apply ice or cold packs
✅ Anti-inflammatory and analgesic to relieve severe pain
✅ Medicated gels like gummex, dentogel to applied in small quantity
✅ Vitamin C, B12 supplements
✅ Traditional agents like ghee, yoghurt, turmeric, honey
