STORYLINE:
A few hundred people gathered in Serbia's capital to mark International Women's Day on Wednesday.

They rallied against gender discrimination and violence and demanded better treatment for women.

In neighbouring North Macedonia, around a thousand people protested in the capital to demand better rights for women.  

Activists for women’s rights called for gender equality at work, in society, in politics and at home.
 
The United Nations recognized International Women's Day in 1977, but the occasion has its roots in labor movements of the early 20th century.
