In this video I walk through the latest updates to my heavily-modified RAT-style distortion pedal. I’ve been chasing more headroom and a bigger gap between the clean-boost mode and diode-clipping mode.
The new version uses a custom SOIC-to-DIP adapter I designed in KiCad to drop modern rail-to-rail op-amps (like the OPA191) straight into an 8-pin socket. Combined with a refined output network (22 µF coupling, tuned resistors, and a revised voltage divider), this lets the op-amp stay clean while the 1N914 diodes handle the clipping.
I show the challenges of keeping the op-amp from clipping before the diodes, isolating the output with a series resistor, and tweaking the feedback and divider values to get a real “clean boost” when the diodes are lifted. You’ll see the difference in headroom, dynamics, and low-end fullness between modes, plus some of the design lessons I’ve learned building these analog circuits.
