When most people think of the Pontiac Silverdome, they remember it as the home of the Detroit Lions from 1975 to 2001. But this iconic venue was much more—it was one of Barton Malow’s most ambitious projects at the time. Originally planned as an open-air stadium, the design changed midway to include a 12-acre air-supported fabric roof, the largest of its kind in North America. Using helicopters, massive suspension cables, and powerful fans, Barton Malow installed and inflated the roof, creating a pioneering structure.
The scale of the project was staggering: 1.5 million cubic yards of dirt moved, 1,700 tons of steel set, and 52,000 cubic yards of concrete poured by more than 2,500 trades workers—without work stoppages or overtime. Completed in just 23 months and within budget during a period of inflation, the Silverdome set a standard for efficiency and innovation.
